[415] **"One who has given up delight, who has crossed the flood, liberated"** (nandiñjahaṃ oghatiṇṇaṃ vimuttaṃ): "Delight" (nandi) is said to be craving (taṇhā) — whatever lust, whatever infatuation … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. That delight, that craving, has been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future; therefore the Buddha is "one who has given up delight."
**"Who has crossed the flood"** (oghatiṇṇaṃ): the Blessed One has crossed the flood of sensuality, crossed the flood of existence, crossed the flood of views, crossed the flood of ignorance (avijjā); he has crossed the entire course of saṃsāra — crossed over it, crossed beyond it, passed it, passed wholly beyond it, transcended it. He has completed his dwelling, fulfilled his conduct … for him there is no round of birth, aging, death (jāti, jarā, maraṇa), no renewed existence. Hence "one who has given up delight, who has crossed the flood."
**"Liberated"** (vimuttaṃ): the Blessed One's mind (citta) is freed from lust — freed, liberated, well liberated; his mind is freed from hatred — freed, liberated, well liberated; his mind is freed from delusion — freed, liberated, well liberated; from anger, from grudging … his mind is freed, liberated, well liberated from all unwholesome volitional formations. Hence "one who has given up delight, who has crossed the flood, liberated."
