[427] **"Because of that very thing, Māra pursues a person" (teneva māro anveti jantuṃ):** through the power of that very kammic volitional formation (kammābhisaṅkhāra), Māra as the aggregates (khandhamāra), Māra as the elements (dhātu) (dhātumāra), Māra as the sense bases (āyatana) (āyatanamāra), Māra as destination (gatimāra), Māra as reappearance (upapattimāra), Māra as rebirth-linking (paṭisandhimāra), Māra as existence (bhavamāra), Māra as saṃsāra (saṃsāramāra), Māra as the round (vaṭṭamāra) — bound up with rebirth-linking — pursues him, follows after him, becomes his follower.
**"A person" (jantuṃ):** a being, a man, a youth (mānava),¹ a person (posa), an individual (puggala), a living being (jīva), one born (jātu),² a creature (jantu), an indagu, one descended from Manu (manuja) — thus, "because of that very thing, Māra pursues a person."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"One should remove all craving (taṇhā) to grasp (said the Blessed One to Bhadrāvudha),
above, below, and across in the middle;
for whatever they cling to in the world,
because of that very thing Māra pursues a person."
