[429] **Therefore, understanding, one should not cling** (tasmā pajānaṃ na upādiyetha): "Therefore" means for that cause, for that reason, owing to that condition, from that source — seeing this danger (ādīnava) in the craving that grasps (ādānataṇhā); hence, "therefore."
**Understanding** (pajānaṃ): knowing, understanding, cognizing, discerning, distinctly recognizing, penetrating — knowing, understanding, cognizing, discerning, distinctly recognizing, penetrating that "all conditioned things (saṅkhārā) are impermanent" … "whatever is subject to origination, all that is subject to cessation."
**Should not cling** (na upādiyetha): one should not take up form (rūpa), should not cling to it, should not grasp it, should not adhere to it, should not insist upon it; one should not take up feeling (vedanā), perception, volitional formations, consciousness, destination (gati), reappearance (upapatti), rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), existence (bhava), saṃsāra, the round (vaṭṭa), should not cling to them, should not grasp them, should not adhere to them, should not insist upon them. Hence, "therefore, understanding, one should not cling."
