[456] **"Thoughts are its ranging" (vitakkassa vicāraṇā): "thoughts" (vitakkā)** — there are nine thoughts: the thought of sensual pleasures (kāmavitakka), the thought of ill will (byāpādavitakka), the thought of cruelty (vihiṃsāvitakka), thought concerning relatives (ñātivitakka), thought concerning one's country (janapadavitakka), thought connected with immortality (amaravitakka), thought connected with sympathy for others, thought connected with gain, honor, and fame, and thought connected with not being despised. These are called the nine thoughts. These nine thoughts are the roaming, the ranging, the ranging about of that world; by these nine thoughts that world roams, ranges, and ranges about. Hence, "thoughts are its ranging."
