[535] **Of the sixteen attendant brahmins** (paricārikasoḷasannaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ): The brahmin Piṅgiya was the foremost, the most excellent attendant (paricārika) of the brahmin Bāvari; with Piṅgiya they were sixteen — thus, in this way too, "of the sixteen attendant brahmins." Or else: those sixteen brahmins would be the foremost, most excellent attendants of the Buddha, the Blessed One — thus, in this way too, "of the sixteen attendant brahmins."
