[549] **They approached the supreme Buddha (buddhaseṭṭhaṃ upāgamuṃ):** "Buddha" — he who is that Blessed One … this name "Buddha" is a designation derived from realization (sacchikā paññatti).
**Supreme (seṭṭhaṃ):** foremost, supreme, distinguished, preeminent, highest, most excellent — hence, "the supreme Buddha."
**They approached (upāgamuṃ):** they came up to, they drew near to, they attended upon, they questioned, they inquired of him — hence, "they approached the supreme Buddha." Therefore it is said:
These approached the Buddha, the seer (isi) perfect in conduct (caraṇa);
asking subtle questions, they approached the supreme Buddha.
