[569] **Therefore it is called "Pārāyana" (the way to the beyond)** (tasmā pārāyanaṃ iti): "therefore" means for that reason, from that cause, through that condition, with that as its source (taṃnidānā). "The beyond" (pāra) is said to be the Deathless (amata), Nibbāna — that is, the stilling of all formations, the relinquishment of all acquisitions (upadhi), the destruction of craving (taṇhā), dispassion, cessation (nirodha), Nibbāna. "The way" (ayana) is said to be the path (magga). The word "iti" is a connective of words. … This word "iti" marks the sequential ordering of the words. Thus: "therefore it is called Pārāyana." Hence it is said: Developing the supreme path, one would go from the not-beyond to the beyond; that path is for going to the beyond; therefore it is called "Pārāyana" (the way to the beyond).
