[573] **Stainless, of wisdom vast as the earth (vimalo bhūrimedhaso):** As to "stainless" (vimalo): lust (rāga) is a stain (mala), hatred is a stain, delusion is a stain, anger (kodha) is a stain, grudging (upanāha) is a stain … all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā) are stains. Those stains have been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump deprived of its base, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future. Therefore the Buddha is without stain, stainless, free of stain, gone away from stain, one who has abandoned stains, one released from stains, one who has transcended all stains. "Bhūri" is a designation for the earth. The Blessed One is endowed with this wisdom, vast and extensive, equal to the earth. "Medhā" is a designation for wisdom (paññā): that wisdom which is understanding … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view. The Blessed One is endowed, fully endowed, come to, fully come to, possessed of, fully possessed of, and furnished with this wisdom that is medhā. Therefore the Buddha is "of wisdom vast as the earth" (bhūrimedhaso). Thus: stainless, of wisdom vast as the earth.
