[581] **Dispeller of darkness (tamonuda)** — as to the phrase in the passage "The Buddha, the dispeller of darkness, the All-seeing One (samantacakkhu)": the Blessed One dispelled, drove out, abandoned, dispersed, made an end of, and brought to non-existence the darkness of lust (rāga), the darkness of hatred, the darkness of delusion, the darkness of conceit (māna), the darkness of views (diṭṭhi), the darkness of defilements (kilesa), and the darkness of misconduct (duccarita) — which makes blind, which deprives of vision, which deprives of knowledge (ñāṇa), which extinguishes wisdom (paññā), which sides with distress, and which does not conduce to Nibbāna. Therefore he is "the dispeller of darkness."
As to the word **Buddha**: he who is that Blessed One … — this designation "Buddha" is a designation based on realization (sacchikā paññatti).
As to **the All-seeing One**: the All-seeing Eye is a term for the knowledge of omniscience (sabbaññutañāṇa) … By that the Tathāgata is "the All-seeing One." Hence: "The Buddha, the dispeller of darkness, the All-seeing One."
