[582] **Gone to the end of the world, transcended all existence** (lokantagū sabbabhavātivatto): "World" (loka): one world — the world of existence (bhavaloka). Two worlds — the world of existence as success (sampatti) and the world of existence as failure (vipatti).⁴ Three worlds — the three feelings (vedanā). Four worlds — the four nutriments (āhāra). Five worlds — the five aggregates subject to clinging. Six worlds — the six internal sense bases (āyatana). Seven worlds — the seven stations of consciousness (viññāṇaṭṭhiti). Eight worlds — the eight worldly conditions (lokadhamma). Nine worlds — the nine abodes of beings (sattāvāsa). Ten worlds — the ten mental defilements (upakkilesa).¹ Eleven worlds — the eleven sense-sphere existences (kāmabhava).² Twelve worlds — the twelve sense bases. Eighteen worlds — the eighteen elements (dhātu).
**Gone to the end of the world**: the Blessed One has gone to the end of the world, reached the end; gone to the terminus, reached the terminus … gone to Nibbāna, reached Nibbāna. He has lived out the dwelling, fulfilled the conduct … for him there is no round of birth, aging, and death (saṃsāra), no renewed existence — hence "gone to the end of the world."
**Transcended all existence**: "existence" (bhava): there are two existences — kamma-existence (kammabhava) and renewed existence consisting in rebirth-linking (paṭisandhika punabbhava). What is kamma-existence? The formation of merit (puññābhisaṅkhāra), the formation of demerit (apuññābhisaṅkhāra), the formation of the imperturbable (āneñjābhisaṅkhāra) — this is kamma-existence. What is renewed existence consisting in rebirth-linking? Form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness at rebirth-linking — this is renewed existence consisting in rebirth-linking. The Blessed One has transcended, gone beyond, passed beyond kamma-existence and renewed existence consisting in rebirth-linking — hence "gone to the end of the world, transcended all existence."
