[583] **Taintless, one who has abandoned all suffering (anāsavo sabbadukkhappahīno):** "Taintless": there are four taints (āsava): the taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), the taint of views (diṭṭhāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). Those taints have been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump deprived of its base, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future; therefore the Buddha is taintless.
"One who has abandoned all suffering": all his suffering connected with rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) — the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of illness, the suffering of death, the suffering of sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair … the suffering of the disaster of views — has been abandoned, cut off entirely, stilled, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa); therefore the Buddha is one who has abandoned all suffering. Hence: taintless, one who has abandoned all suffering.
