[64] **"The world is shrouded by ignorance"** — "Ignorance (avijjā)": not knowing in regard to suffering (dukkha), not knowing in regard to the origin of suffering, not knowing in regard to the cessation of suffering, not knowing in regard to the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering; not knowing in regard to the past, not knowing in regard to the future, not knowing in regard to both the past and the future; not knowing in regard to dhammas that are dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā) — whatever not-knowing of such a kind there is: not seeing, non-comprehension, non-understanding, non-awakening, non-penetration, non-grasping, non-fathoming, lack of balanced consideration, non-reflection, absence of direct realization; dull-wittedness, foolishness, lack of clear comprehension; bewilderment, utter bewilderment; ignorance as flood, ignorance as yoke, ignorance as latent tendency, ignorance as obsession, ignorance as net; delusion, the unwholesome root — this is called ignorance.
**"The world"**: the hell world, the animal world, the world of the realm of ghosts, the human world, the deva world; the world of the aggregates, the world of the elements (dhātu), the world of the sense bases (āyatana); this world, the other world; the Brahmā world together with the deva world — this is called the world.
The world is enveloped, shrouded, covered over, closed off, concealed, and turned over by this ignorance — hence, "the world is shrouded by ignorance."
