[640] **Lying in the mire, trembling all about.** *Lying in the mire*: lying, lying down, lying all about in the mire of sensual pleasures (kāmapaṅka), in the mud of sensual pleasures, in the defilement of sensual pleasures, on the hook of sensual pleasures, in the fever of sensual pleasures, in the impediment of sensual pleasures — thus, "lying in the mire."
*Trembling all about*: trembling with the trembling of craving (taṇhā), trembling with the trembling of views, trembling with the trembling of defilements, trembling with the trembling of exertion (payoga), trembling with the trembling of result (vipāka), trembling with the trembling of misconduct (duccarita); impassioned, one trembles because of lust (rāga); hating, one trembles because of hatred; deluded, one trembles because of delusion; bound, one trembles because of conceit (māna); misapprehending, one trembles because of view; gone to distraction, one trembles because of restlessness; not having reached certainty, one trembles because of doubt; gone to obstinacy, one trembles because of the latent tendencies (anusaya); one trembles because of gain, trembles because of loss, trembles because of fame, trembles because of disrepute, trembles because of blame, trembles because of praise, trembles because of pleasure, trembles because of pain; one trembles because of birth, trembles because of aging, trembles because of illness, trembles because of death; one trembles because of sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; one trembles because of the suffering (dukkha) of hell, trembles because of the suffering of the animal realm, trembles because of the suffering of the realm of hungry ghosts, trembles because of human suffering — the suffering rooted in descent into the womb, the suffering rooted in remaining in the womb, the suffering rooted in emerging from the womb, the suffering bound up with one who is born, the suffering of one who is born being dependent upon others, suffering through one's own exertion, suffering through the exertion of others; the suffering that is painful feeling (dukkhadukkha), the suffering of formations (saṅkhāradukkha), the suffering of change (vipariṇāmadukkha); the suffering of eye disease, the suffering of ear disease, the suffering of nose disease, the suffering of tongue disease, the suffering of bodily disease, the suffering of head disease, the suffering of disease of the outer ear, the suffering of mouth disease, the suffering of tooth disease; cough, asthma, catarrh, burning fever, fever, stomach disease, fainting, dysentery, gripes, cholera, leprosy, boils, eczema, consumption, epilepsy, ringworm, itch, scab, pox, scabies, disorders of the blood, disorders of the bile, diabetes, hemorrhoids, pustules, fistula; afflictions originating from bile, afflictions originating from phlegm, afflictions originating from wind, afflictions arising from a combination of these, afflictions born of change of season, afflictions born of careless conduct, afflictions produced by assault, afflictions born of the result of kamma; cold, heat, hunger, thirst, defecation, urination; contact with gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and creeping creatures; the suffering of a mother's death, the suffering of a father's death, the suffering of a brother's death, the suffering of a sister's death, the suffering of a son's death, the suffering of a daughter's death; the suffering of loss of relatives, the suffering of loss of wealth, the suffering of loss through illness, the suffering of loss of virtue, the suffering of loss of view — trembling, trembling all about, quaking, quaking violently: thus, "lying in the mire, trembling all about."
