[643] **Crossed over the flood (oghatiṇṇaṃ):** the Blessed One has crossed the flood of sensuality (kāmogha), crossed the flood of existence (bhavogha), crossed the flood of views (diṭṭhogha), crossed the flood of ignorance (avijjogha); he has crossed over, crossed out of it, gone beyond, entirely gone beyond, passed beyond it. He has completed his dwelling, fulfilled his conduct … for him there is no round of birth, aging, death (jāti-jarā-maraṇa-saṃsāra); there is no renewed existence for him. Therefore, "crossed over the flood."
**Without taints (anāsavaṃ):** there are four taints (āsava): the taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), the taint of views (diṭṭhāsava), the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). Those taints have been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future. Therefore the Buddha is without taints. Thus, "crossed over the flood, without taints." Hence the Elder Piṅgiya said:
Lying in the mire, floundering,
I drifted from island to island;
Then I saw the Fully Awakened One,
Crossed over the flood, without taints.
