[651] **"The Fully Awakened One whose covering is drawn open (vivaṭacchado sambuddho)"** — as to "covering" (chadana): there are five coverings — the covering of craving (taṇhā), the covering of views (diṭṭhi), the covering of defilements (kilesa), the covering of misconduct (duccarita), and the covering of ignorance (avijjā). For the Buddha, the Blessed One, those coverings have been drawn open, demolished, uprooted, abandoned, cut off entirely, stilled, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa); therefore the Buddha is "one whose covering is drawn open."
**"The Buddha"**: he who is that Blessed One … "Buddha" is a designation (paññatti) based on realization (sacchikā). Hence "the Fully Awakened One whose covering is drawn open."
