[655] **"He knew all, high and low (sabbaṃ vedi parovaraṃ)"**: the Blessed One knew, understood, touched, and penetrated the dhammas that make oneself and others superior devas (adhideva). What are the dhammas that make oneself a superior deva? Right practice, conforming practice, unopposed practice, practice in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipadā); the fulfillment of virtues; guarding the doors of the sense faculties; moderation in eating; devotion to wakefulness; mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampajañña); the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) … the noble eightfold path — these are called the dhammas that make oneself a superior deva. What are the dhammas that make others superior devas? Right practice … the noble eightfold path — these are called the dhammas that make others superior devas. Thus the Blessed One knew, understood, touched, and penetrated the dhammas that make himself and others superior devas: hence, "He knew all, high and low." --- [Footnotes in the Siam Raṭṭha edition, giving variant readings:] ¹ M(arammavāsī, Burmese ed.): *paroparaṃ*; likewise below. ² M: *sammutidevā vuccanti*. ³ M: *upapattidevā vuccanti*. ⁴ M: *taduttari*. ⁵ M: *visuddhidevā vuccanti tathāgatā*.
