[656] **"The Teacher who makes an end of questions" (pañhānantakaro satthā):** the Blessed One makes an end, makes a final end, makes a delimitation, makes a complete conclusion of the questions of the Pārāyana (brahmins); he makes an end, makes a final end, makes a delimitation, makes a complete conclusion of the questions of the assemblies (parisā); he makes an end, makes a final end, makes a delimitation, makes a complete conclusion of the questions of Piṅgiya; he makes an end, makes a final end, makes a delimitation, makes a complete conclusion of the questions of Sakka, the questions of non-human beings, the questions of bhikkhus, the questions of bhikkhunīs, the questions of laymen (upāsaka), the questions of laywomen (upāsikā), the questions of kings, the questions of khattiyas, the questions of brahmins, the questions of vessas, the questions of suddas, and the questions of brahmās — thus he is "the one who makes an end of questions." **"The Teacher" (satthā):** the Blessed One is a caravan leader (satthavāha). Just as a caravan leader brings caravans across a wilderness — brings them across a wilderness of robbers, brings them across a wilderness of wild beasts, brings them across a wilderness of famine, brings them across a waterless wilderness — brings them across, leads them over, leads them out, and conveys them to a region of safety; even so the Blessed One, the caravan leader, brings beings across the wilderness: he brings them across the wilderness of birth, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; he brings them across the wilderness of lust (rāga); he brings them across the wilderness of hatred, delusion (moha), conceit (māna), views (diṭṭhi), defilements (kilesa), and misconduct (duccarita); he brings them across the thicket of lust, brings them across the thicket of hatred, brings them across the thicket of delusion, brings them across the thicket of views, defilements, and misconduct — brings them across, leads them over, leads them out, and conveys them to the region of safety, the deathless Nibbāna. Thus the Blessed One is a caravan leader. Or else: the Blessed One is a leader, a guide, one who leads onward, one who makes others understand, one who makes them reflect, one who watches over them, one who inspires their confidence — thus too the Blessed One is a caravan leader. Or else: the Blessed One is the arouser of the path (magga) unarisen, the producer of the path unproduced, the declarer of the path undeclared; he is the knower of the path, the discoverer of the path, the one skilled in the path; and now his disciples dwell following that path, being endowed with it afterwards — thus too the Blessed One is a caravan leader. Hence: "the Teacher who makes an end of questions."
