[676] **"Entangled, like a spreading bamboo (vaṃso visālova yathā visatto):** a bamboo clump is called "vaṃsa" (bamboo). Just as in a bamboo clump the thorns are tangled, interwoven, entangled, caught, hooked, and bound up, even so "visattikā" (the entangler) is a term for craving (taṇhā) — that is: lust, passion, fondness, compliance, delight, delight-and-lust, passion of the mind (citta), wanting, infatuation, adherence, greed, complete greed, attachment, the mire, agitation, deceit, the genetrix, the producer, the seamstress, the ensnaring net, the river, the entangler, sleep (sottaṃ), the widespread, the accumulator (āyūhanī), the companion, aspiration, the conduit to existence (bhavanetti), the jungle, the undergrowth, intimacy, affection, longing, attachment, hope, hoping, the state of hoping — hope for forms, hope for sounds, hope for odours, hope for tastes, hope for tangibles, hope for gain, hope for wealth, hope for sons, hope for life — hankering, hankering after, hankering over, the act of hankering, the state of hankering, greediness, the act of greediness, the state of greediness, fawning agitation, desire for what is bad, unrighteous lust, inordinate lust, inordinate greed, wanting, the act of wanting, wishing, envious wishing, full aspiration; craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence; craving for form [existence], craving for the formless, craving for cessation; craving for forms, craving for sounds, craving for odours, craving for tastes, craving for tangibles, craving for dhammas; the flood (ogha), the yoke (yoga), the tie (gantha), clinging (upādāna), the obstruction, the hindrance (nīvaraṇa), the covering, the bond, the defilement (upakkilesa), the latent tendency (anusaya), the obsession (pariyuṭṭhāna), the creeper, manifold desire; the root of suffering (dukkha), the source of suffering, the origin of suffering; Māra's snare, Māra's hook, Māra's domain, Māra's abode, Māra's bond; the river of craving, the net of craving, the leash of craving, the ocean of craving; covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root.
**"Visattikā":** in what sense is craving "visattikā"? It is spread out (visatā), thus it is visattikā. It is extensive (visālā), thus it is visattikā. It is diffused (visaṭā), thus it is visattikā. It creeps about (visakkati), thus it is visattikā. It carries poison (visaṃharati), thus it is visattikā. It is deceiving (visaṃvādikā), thus it is visattikā. It has a poisonous root (visamūlā), thus it is visattikā. It has poisonous fruit (visaphalā), thus it is visattikā. Its consumption is poisonous (visaparibhogā), thus it is visattikā.
Or alternatively, that craving, being extensive, is spread and extended with regard to forms, sounds, odours, tastes, tangibles; family, company, dwelling; gain, fame, praise, pleasure; robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick; the sense-sphere element (dhātu), the form element, the formless element; sense-sphere existence, form existence, formless existence; percipient existence, non-percipient existence, neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient existence; one-constituent existence, four-constituent existence, five-constituent existence; the past, the future, and the present; among dhammas seen, heard, sensed, and to be cognized — thus it is "visattikā." Hence: "entangled, like a spreading bamboo."
