[686] Play (khiḍḍā), in the exposition "Play and delight are in the midst of companions" (khiḍḍā ratī hoti sahāyamajjhe): there are two kinds of play — bodily play and verbal play.
What is bodily play? They play with elephants, play with horses, play with chariots, play with bows; they play on eight-row boards (aṭṭhapada), play on ten-row boards (dasapada), play at games in the air (ākāsa), play at hopscotch (parihārapatha), play at spillikins (santikā), play at dice (khalikā), play at tip-cat (ghaṭikā), play at hand-pictures (salākahattha), play at ball games (akkha), play at blowing through toy leaf-pipes (paṅkacīra), play with toy ploughs (vaṅkaka), play at turning somersaults (mokkhacikā), play with toy windmills (ciṅgulaka), play with toy leaf-measures (pattāḷhaka), play with toy chariots (rathaka), play with toy bows (dhanuka), play at guessing letters (akkharikā), play at guessing thoughts (manesikā), play at mimicking deformities (yathāvajja). This is bodily play.
What is verbal play? Drumming with the mouth (mukhabheri), sounding the āḷambara drum with the mouth, sounding the kettle-drum with the mouth (mukhadeṇḍimaka), whistling with the mouth (mukhavalimaka), humming with the mouth (mukhabheruḷaka), patter-drumming with the mouth (mukhadaddarikā), theatrical recitation (nāṭika), dance-song (lāsa), singing (gīta), and jesting (davakamma). This is verbal play.
Delight (ratī): this word "delight" is an expression for the absence of discontent (anukkaṇṭhita).
In the midst of companions (sahāyamajjhe): "companions" are said to be those with whom going is at ease, coming is at ease, going and coming are at ease, standing is at ease, sitting is at ease, lying down is at ease, addressing is at ease, conversing is at ease, talking is at ease, and discussing together is at ease.
Play and delight are in the midst of companions: play and delight are in the midst of companions; therefore, "play and delight are in the midst of companions."
