[700] **"Having cut off the household bonds, the hero (vīro)"** [11]: He is a hero (vīra) because he possesses energy. He is a hero because he is capable; a hero because he is mighty; a hero because he is adequate to the task; a hero because he is brave. He is courageous, fearless, intrepid, not given to terror, not one who flees; he has abandoned fear and dread [12] and is free from horripilation — thus he is a hero.
Abstaining [13] right here from all evils,
having passed beyond the suffering (dukkha) of hell, he dwells in energy (vīriya);
he, possessed of energy, possessed of striving (padhāna),
such a one (tādi) is called a hero, because he is thus.
"Household bonds" is said of: sons and [14] female and male slaves, goats and sheep, chickens and pigs, elephants, cattle, horses and mares, field and land, silver and gold, villages, towns and royal capitals, country and province, treasury and granary — any object whatsoever that provokes lust.
**"Having cut off the household bonds, the hero"**: that Paccekasambuddha, the hero, having cut, having cut off completely, having abandoned, dispelled, put an end to, and brought to non-existence the household bonds — thus, "having cut off the household bonds, the hero." **"He should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn."** Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said:
Having discarded the marks of a householder,
like a koviḷāra tree whose leaves are shed,
the hero, having cut off the household bonds,
should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn.
