Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 71

[71] *Iccāyasmā Ajito* ("Thus the venerable Ajita"): The word "thus" (*icca*) is a connection of words, a linking of words, a completing of a phrase, a conjunction of syllables, a euphony of consonants; this word "thus" is a sequential ordering of words. "Venerable" (*āyasmā*): this word "venerable" is a term of affection, a term of respect, a designation conveying reverence and deference. "Ajita": this is that brahmin's (*brāhmaṇa*) name — his reckoning, appellation, designation (*paññatti*), current usage; his name, act of naming, name-assignment; an expression, a phrasing, a term of address. Hence, "thus the venerable Ajita." ¹ The Sīhala (Sinhalese) edition reads *pithīyare*; the Marammа (Burmese) edition reads *pidhīyare*; so also below.

English translation from the Pali (Siam Raṭṭha edition) — under review, not for citation.
