[727] "Calamity (ītī) and boil (gaṇḍa) and disaster (upaddava) and disease (roga) and dart (salla) and peril (bhaya) — this is for me": for this was said by the Blessed One:
"'Peril,' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures (kāma). 'Suffering (dukkha),' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Disease,' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Boil,' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Clinging (lagga),' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Attachment (satta),' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Mire (paṅka),' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures. 'Womb (gabbha),' bhikkhus, is a designation of sensual pleasures.
"And why, bhikkhus, is 'peril' a designation of sensual pleasures? One who is impassioned with sensual lust (kāmarāga), bhikkhus, bound by desire and lust (chandarāga), is not released even from peril pertaining to the present life, nor is he released even from peril pertaining to the life to come; therefore 'peril' is a designation of sensual pleasures.
"And why, bhikkhus, are 'suffering,' 'disease,' 'boil,' 'clinging,' 'attachment,' 'mire,' and 'womb' designations of sensual pleasures? One who is impassioned with sensual lust, bhikkhus, bound by desire and lust, is not released even from the womb pertaining to the present life, nor is he released even from the womb pertaining to the life to come; therefore 'womb' is a designation of sensual pleasures."
Peril and suffering and disease,
attachment and mire — both of these:
these are called sensual pleasures,
wherein the worldling is attached;
sunk down through what seems pleasant,
he goes on to the womb.
But when, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu
does not neglect meditation (jhāna),
then, having passed beyond this miry path so hard to travel,
he looks upon such a generation,
beset by birth and aging, trembling.
Therefore: "Calamity and boil and disaster and disease and dart and peril — this is for me."
