[736] **He should dwell in the forest as he pleases (yathābhirantaṃ vihare araññe):** just as that bull elephant (hatthināga) dwells in the forest as it pleases, so too the Paccekasambuddha dwells in the forest as he pleases: he dwells in the forest as he pleases with the first jhāna; with the second, the third, and the fourth jhāna he dwells in the forest as he pleases; he dwells in the forest as he pleases with the liberation of mind (cetovimutti) through loving-kindness; with the liberation of mind through compassion, through altruistic joy, and through equanimity he dwells in the forest as he pleases; he dwells in the forest as he pleases with the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of infinity of space; with the attainment of the sphere of infinity of consciousness, with the attainment of the sphere of nothingness, with the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and with the attainment of fruition he dwells in the forest as he pleases. Hence, "He should dwell in the forest as he pleases; he should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn (khaggavisāṇakappa)." Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said:
Like a nāga elephant that has forsaken the herds,
with massive, full-grown shoulders, lotus-marked, lofty,
he should dwell in the forest as he pleases;
he should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.
