[741] **"He has gone beyond the contortions of views (diṭṭhīvisūkāni upātivatto):** it is the personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) with its twenty grounds that is called "the contortions of views." Here an unlearned ordinary person (puthujjana), who has no regard for the noble ones, who is unskilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, undisciplined in the Dhamma of the noble ones, who has no regard for good persons, who is unskilled in the Dhamma of good persons, undisciplined in the Dhamma of good persons, regards form (rūpa) as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form; he regards feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), consciousness (viññāṇa) as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness. Whatever view is of such a kind—the resort to views, the thicket of views, the wilderness of views, the contortion of views, the vacillation of views, the fetter (saṃyojana) of views; the grasping, the taking hold, the adherence, the misapprehension; the bad road, the wrong way, wrongness, the sphere of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana); the grasp through perversion, the perverted grasp, the inverted grasp, the wrong grasp; the grasping of what is not real as "real"—as far as the sixty-two speculative views extend: these are the contortions of views.
**"He has gone beyond":** he has gone beyond, passed beyond, fully transcended, and gone past the contortions of views; therefore, "he has gone beyond the contortions of views."
