[742] **"He has reached the fixed course (niyāma), having obtained the path"** — "the fixed course" is said of the four paths (magga), the noble eightfold path, namely: right view (sammādiṭṭhi), right thought (sammāsaṅkappa), right speech (sammāvācā), right action (sammākammanta), right livelihood (sammā-ājīva), right effort (sammāvāyāma), right mindfulness (sammāsati), right concentration (sammāsamādhi). One who is endowed with the four noble paths has reached, attained, touched, and realized [the fixed course]; therefore, "he has reached the fixed course."
**"Having obtained the path"** means: the path has been gained, the path has been obtained, the path has been attained, the path has been touched; therefore, "he has reached the fixed course, having obtained the path."
