[765] **This is a tie; scanty is the happiness herein (saṅgo eso parittamettha sokhyaṃ):** "a tie" (saṅga), or "a hook" (baḷisa), or "bait" (āmisa), or "a snagging" (laggana), or "an impediment" (palibodha) — this is a designation for the five strands of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa).
**Scanty is the happiness herein:** For this was said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, there are these five strands of sensual pleasure. What five? Forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, provoking lust; sounds cognizable by the ear; odors cognizable by the nose; tastes cognizable by the tongue; tangibles cognizable by the body that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, provoking lust. These, bhikkhus, are the five strands of sensual pleasure. Whatever pleasure and joy (somanassa) arises in dependence on these five strands of sensual pleasure — this is called sensual pleasure (kāmasukha). Slight is this pleasure, inferior is this pleasure, low is this pleasure, suffering (dukkha) is this pleasure." Thus: this is a tie; scanty is the happiness herein.
