[767] **"Knowing 'This is a boil,' the wise one"** (gaṇḍo eso iti ñatvā matimā): "a boil," or "a hook," or "bait," or "a snag," or "an impediment" — this is a designation for the five strands of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa).
**"Iti"**: this is a connecting of words, a linking of words, a completing of words, a combining of syllables, a euphony of consonants; this word "iti" is a matter of the sequence of words.
**"The wise one"** (matimā): one who is wise, endowed with wisdom, intelligent, possessed of knowledge (ñāṇa), discerning, sagacious.
**"Knowing 'This is a boil,' the wise one"**: the wise one, having known it as "a boil," having known it as "a hook," having known it as "bait," having known it as "a snag," having known it as "an impediment" — having known, having weighed, having judged, having made clear, having made evident — thus, "knowing 'This is a boil,' the wise one." "He should wander alone, like the horn of a rhinoceros." Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said:
This is a tie; slight is the happiness herein;
little the gratification, and greater herein the suffering (dukkha).
Knowing "This is a boil," the wise one
should wander alone, like the horn of a rhinoceros.
