[802] **"One who has appraised the Dhamma, assured, possessed of exertion" (saṅkhātadhammo niyato padhānavā):** "Appraised" — knowledge (ñāṇa) is meant: that which is wisdom, understanding … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view. **"One who has appraised the Dhamma":** that Paccekasambuddha has appraised the Dhamma, known the Dhamma, weighed the Dhamma, judged the Dhamma, made clear the Dhamma, made plain the Dhamma: "All formations are impermanent" … "Whatever is subject to origination, all that is subject to cessation" — thus he has appraised the Dhamma, known the Dhamma, weighed the Dhamma, judged the Dhamma, made clear the Dhamma, made plain the Dhamma. Or else, for that Paccekasambuddha the aggregates (khandha) have been appraised, the elements (dhātu) have been appraised, the sense bases (āyatana) have been appraised, the destinations have been appraised, the rebirths have been appraised, the re-linkings have been appraised, the existences have been appraised, the rounds of saṃsāra have been appraised, the rounds of the cycle (vaṭṭa) have been appraised. Or else, the Paccekasambuddha stands at the limit of the aggregates, stands at the limit of the elements, stands at the limit of the sense bases, stands at the limit of the destinations, stands at the limit of the rebirths, stands at the limit of the re-linkings, stands at the limit of the existences, stands at the limit of saṃsāra, stands at the limit of the cycle, stands at the limit of formations; standing in his final existence, the Paccekasambuddha bears his final body. For whom this is the last existence, this the final bodily frame, the round of birth, aging, and death — for him there is no renewed existence. Therefore he is "one who has appraised the Dhamma." **"Assured" (niyato):** the four noble paths are called the fixed courses (niyāma). Endowed with the four noble paths, he is assured; by the noble paths he has reached, attained, touched, and realized the fixed course — thus he is "assured." **"Possessed of exertion" (padhānavā):** exertion (padhāna) means energy — whatever mental instigation of energy, striving forth, endeavor, zeal, vigor, strength, steadfastness, unrelenting endeavor, not relinquishing desire to act, not relinquishing the task, the shouldering of the task; energy, the faculty of energy, the power of energy, right effort. That Paccekasambuddha is endowed, fully endowed, come to, fully come to, possessed of, fully possessed of, and furnished with this exertion; therefore that Paccekasambuddha is "possessed of exertion." Thus, "one who has appraised the Dhamma, assured, possessed of exertion, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said: Aspiring to the destruction of craving (taṇhā), heedful, intelligent and articulate, learned, possessed of mindfulness, one who has appraised the Dhamma, assured, possessed of exertion, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.
