[806] **Like a lotus unsmeared by water (padumaṃ va toyena alimpamāno):** "paduma" is said of the lotus flower. "Toya" is said of water. Just as the lotus flower is not smeared by water, is unsmeared, not besmeared — even so, there are two smearings (lepa): the smearing of craving (taṇhā) and the smearing of view (diṭṭhi). … This is the smearing of craving. … This is the smearing of view. That Paccekasambuddha has abandoned the smearing of craving and relinquished the smearing of view. Because the smearing of craving has been abandoned, because the smearing of view has been relinquished, that Paccekasambuddha is not smeared by forms, is not smeared by sounds, … is not smeared by things seen, heard, sensed, or to be cognized; he is not smeared, not besmeared, unsmeared, unbesmeared; gone out, released, fully freed, detached, he dwells with a mind rid of limits (vimariyādikatena cetasā). Hence, "like a lotus unsmeared by water." "One should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." Therefore that Paccekasambuddha said:
Like a lion not startled at sounds,
like the wind not caught in a net,
like a lotus unsmeared by water,
one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.
