[820] **Humans, wise regarding their own benefit, are impure (attatthapaññā asucī manussā):** **"Wise regarding their own benefit" (attatthapaññā):** for their own benefit, for their own sake, on account of themselves, by reason of themselves, they associate, associate closely, frequent, frequent constantly, cultivate, conduct themselves toward, conduct themselves fully toward, attend upon, ask questions, and make inquiries — thus they are "wise regarding their own benefit." **"Humans are impure" (asucī manussā):** They are endowed with impure bodily action (kāyakamma) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure verbal action (vacīkamma) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure mental action (manokamma) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), impure taking what is not given (adinnādāna), impure sexual misconduct (kāmesumicchācāra), impure false speech (musāvāda), impure divisive speech (pisuṇā vācā), impure harsh speech (pharusā vācā), impure frivolous talk (samphappalāpa), impure covetousness (abhijjhā), impure ill will (byāpāda), impure wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure volition (cetanā) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure aspiration (patthanā) — thus humans are impure. They are endowed with impure resolve (paṇidhi) — thus humans are impure; they are inferior, low, degraded, mean, base, wretched, petty. Thus "humans, wise regarding their own benefit, are impure."
