[89] **"With the cessation of consciousness, this ceases there"** means: with the cessation of the kamma-forming consciousness (abhisaṅkhāraviññāṇa) through the knowledge (ñāṇa) of the path of stream-entry (sotāpattimagga), whatever name-and-form (nāmarūpa) would arise in the beginningless round of rebirths (saṃsāra), excepting seven existences — these cease there, are stilled, come to an end, are allayed. With the cessation of the kamma-forming consciousness through the knowledge of the path of once-returning (sakadāgāmimagga), whatever name-and-form would arise in five existences, excepting two existences — these cease there, are stilled, come to an end, are allayed. With the cessation of the kamma-forming consciousness through the knowledge of the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga), whatever name-and-form would arise in the sense-sphere element, the form element, or the formless element (dhātu), excepting one existence — these cease there, are stilled, come to an end, are allayed. With the cessation of the kamma-forming consciousness through the knowledge of the path of Arahantship (arahattamagga), whatever name-and-form would arise — these cease there, are stilled, come to an end, are allayed. For the Arahant attaining final Nibbāna by the element of final Nibbāna without residue remaining (anupādisesā parinibbānadhātu), with the cessation of the preceding consciousness, wisdom and mindfulness and name-and-form — these cease there, are stilled, come to an end, are allayed. Thus: "with the cessation of consciousness, this ceases there." Therefore the Blessed One said: "The question that you have asked, Ajita, I shall answer for you: where name and form cease without remainder — with the cessation of consciousness, this ceases there."
