[91] **"Ye ca saṅkhātadhammāse" (and those who have comprehended dhammas):** "those who have comprehended dhammas" is said of the arahants whose taints (āsava) are destroyed. For what reason are the arahants whose taints are destroyed called "those who have comprehended dhammas"? Because for them dhammas have been comprehended, dhammas have been known, dhammas have been weighed, dhammas have been judged, dhammas have been made evident, dhammas have been made clear. "All volitional formations are impermanent" — thus dhammas have been comprehended, dhammas have been known, dhammas have been weighed, dhammas have been judged, dhammas have been made evident, dhammas have been made clear. "All volitional formations are suffering (dukkha)" — thus dhammas have been comprehended … "All dhammas are not-self" — thus dhammas have been comprehended. "With ignorance as condition, volitional formations [come to be]" — thus dhammas have been comprehended … "Whatever is of a nature to originate, all that is of a nature to cease" — thus dhammas have been comprehended, dhammas have been known, dhammas have been weighed, dhammas have been judged, dhammas have been made evident, dhammas have been made clear.
Or else: for them the aggregates (khandha) have been reckoned, the elements (dhātu) have been reckoned, the sense bases (āyatana) have been reckoned, destinations have been reckoned, rebirths have been reckoned, relinkings (paṭisandhi) have been reckoned, existences have been reckoned, wanderings-on (saṃsāra) have been reckoned, the rounds (vaṭṭa) have been reckoned.
Or else: they stand at the end of the aggregates, they stand at the end of the elements, they stand at the end of the sense bases, they stand at the end of destinations, they stand at the end of rebirth, they stand at the end of relinking, they stand at the end of existence, they stand at the end of saṃsāra, they stand at the end of the round; they stand in their final existence, they stand in their final composite frame — arahants bearing their last body.
For them this is the last, this the final composite frame;
the saṃsāra of birth and death — for them there is no renewed existence.
For that reason the arahants whose taints are destroyed are called "those who have comprehended dhammas." Hence: **"and those who have comprehended dhammas."**
