[92] **"And the many trainers here" (ye ca sekkhā puthū idha):** *Trainers (sekhā)* — for what reason are they called trainers? They train (sikkhanti), therefore they are trainers. In what do they train? They train in the higher virtue, they train in the higher mind, and they train in the higher wisdom. And what is the training in higher virtue (adhisīla-sikkhā)? Here a bhikkhu is virtuous; he dwells restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, accomplished in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults; having undertaken the training precepts, he trains in them — the small aggregate of virtue and the great aggregate of virtue; virtue as foundation, as barrier, as restraint, as guard, as the doorway and forefront for the right attainment of wholesome dhammas. This is the training in higher virtue. And what is the training in higher mind (adhicitta-sikkhā)? Here a bhikkhu, secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome dhammas, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture (pīti) and pleasure born of seclusion; [he enters and dwells in] the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna. This is the training in higher mind. And what is the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññā-sikkhā)? Here a bhikkhu is wise; he is endowed with wisdom directed to arising and passing away, which is noble and penetrative, leading rightly to the destruction of suffering (dukkha). He understands as it really is: "This is suffering." He understands as it really is: "This is the origin of suffering," "This is the cessation of suffering," "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering." He understands as it really is: "These are the taints (āsava)," "This is the origin of the taints," "This is the cessation of the taints," "This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of the taints." This is the training in higher wisdom. Adverting to these three trainings, they train; knowing, they train; resolving the mind (citta), they train; inclining with faith, they train; applying energy, they train; establishing mindfulness, they train; concentrating the mind, they train; understanding with wisdom, they train; directly knowing what is to be directly known, they train; fully understanding what is to be fully understood, they train; abandoning what is to be abandoned, they train; developing what is to be developed, they train; realizing what is to be realized, they train. They practise, they conduct themselves, they comport themselves well; having undertaken [the training], they proceed. For that reason they are called trainers. *Many (puthū):* they are many. These trainers are stream-enterers and those practising [for that fruit], once-returners and those practising [for that fruit], non-returners and those practising [for that fruit], arahants and those practising [for that fruit]. *Here (idha):* in this view, in this acceptance, in this preference, in this holding, in this Discipline, in this Dhamma, in this Dhamma-and-Discipline, in this teaching, in this holy life, in this Teacher's dispensation, in this personal existence, in this human world. Hence: "And the many trainers here."
