One sees arising and occurrence,
the sign (nimitta), as suffering (dukkha),
and accumulation (āyuhana) and rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) —
this is the knowledge (ñāṇa) of danger (ādīnava).
One sees non-arising, non-occurrence,
the signless, as happiness,
and non-accumulation and non-rebirth-linking —
this is the knowledge of the state of peace (santipada).
This knowledge of danger
arises in five instances;
the knowledge of the state of peace, in five instances;
one understands the ten knowledges.
Through skill in the two knowledges,
one is not shaken by various views.
That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of what is known, and wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: wisdom in the appearance as terror (bhayatupaṭṭhāna) is the knowledge of danger (ādīnavañāṇa).
