[139] What are the eight change-of-lineage (gotrabhū) dhammas that arise by the power of serenity (samatha)?
It is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) for the sake of obtaining the first jhāna; it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra) for the sake of obtaining the second jhāna; it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes rapture for the sake of obtaining the third jhāna; it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes pleasure and pain for the sake of obtaining the fourth jhāna; it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes perception of form, perception of repulsion, and perception of diversity for the sake of obtaining the attainment of the Sphere of Infinity of Space (ākāsānañcāyatana-samāpatti); it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes the perception of the Sphere of Infinity of Space for the sake of obtaining the attainment of the Sphere of Infinity of Consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana-samāpatti); it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes the perception of the Sphere of Infinity of Consciousness for the sake of obtaining the attainment of the Sphere of Nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana-samāpatti); it is change-of-lineage in that it overcomes the perception of the Sphere of Nothingness for the sake of obtaining the attainment of the Sphere of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana-samāpatti).
These eight change-of-lineage dhammas arise by the power of serenity.
