[176] Furthermore, there are four planes (bhūmi): the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the four right strivings (sammappadhāna), the four bases of success (iddhipāda), the four jhānas, the four boundless states (appamaññā), the four attainments of the formless sphere (arūpāvacarasamāpatti), the four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), the four modes of practice (paṭipadā), the four objects (ārammaṇa), the four noble lineages (ariyavaṃsa), the four bases of social solidarity (saṅgahavatthu), the four wheels (cakka), the four dhamma-statements (dhammapada) — these are the four planes.
That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of its being known; it is wisdom in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: wisdom in defining the four dhammas is knowledge of the diversity of planes.
