[2] How is it that the giving of ear (sotāvadhāna) — the wisdom (paññā) that understands thus: "These dhammas are to be directly known (abhiññeyyā)" — is knowledge consisting in what has been heard (sutamaye ñāṇaṃ)?
One dhamma is to be directly known: all beings are sustained by nutriment (āhāraṭṭhitikā). Two dhammas are to be directly known: the two elements (dhātu). Three dhammas are to be directly known: the three elements. Four dhammas are to be directly known: the four noble truths (ariyasacca). Five dhammas are to be directly known: the five bases of liberation (vimuttāyatanāni). Six dhammas are to be directly known: the six unsurpassable things (anuttariyāni). Seven dhammas are to be directly known: the seven grounds for the designation "niddasa" (niddasavatthūni). Eight dhammas are to be directly known: the eight bases of mastery (abhibhāyatanāni). Nine dhammas are to be directly known: the nine successive abidings (anupubbavihārā). Ten dhammas are to be directly known: the ten grounds for wearing away (nijjaravatthūni).
