[213] By means of non-ill will (abyāpāda) … by means of the perception of light (ālokasaññā), by means of non-distraction (avikkhepa), by means of the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna), by means of knowledge (ñāṇa), by means of gladness (pāmujja), by means of the first jhāna, by means of the second jhāna, by means of the third jhāna, by means of the fourth jhāna, by means of the attainment of the Sphere of Infinity of Space (ākāsānañcāyatana-samāpatti), by means of the attainment of the Sphere of Infinity of Consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana-samāpatti), by means of the attainment of the Sphere of Nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana-samāpatti), by means of the attainment of the Sphere of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana-samāpatti), by means of the earth kasiṇa, by means of the water kasiṇa, by means of the fire kasiṇa, by means of the air kasiṇa, by means of the blue kasiṇa, by means of the yellow kasiṇa, by means of the red kasiṇa, by means of the white kasiṇa, by means of the space kasiṇa, by means of the consciousness kasiṇa, by means of the recollection of the Buddha (buddhānussati), by means of the recollection of the Dhamma, by means of the recollection of the Saṅgha, by means of the recollection of morality (sīlānussati), by means of the recollection of liberality (cāgānussati), by means of the recollection of deities (devatānussati), by means of mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati), by means of mindfulness of death (maraṇassati), by means of mindfulness occupied with the body (kāyagatāsati), by means of the recollection of peace (upasamānussati), by means of the perception of a bloated corpse (uddhumātakasaññā), by means of the perception of a livid corpse, by means of the perception of a festering corpse, by means of the perception of a cut-up corpse, by means of the perception of a gnawed corpse, by means of the perception of a scattered corpse, by means of the perception of a hacked and scattered corpse, by means of the perception of a blood-stained corpse, by means of the perception of a worm-infested corpse, by means of the perception of a skeleton, by means of a long out-breath, by means of a long in-breath, by means of a short out-breath, by means of a short in-breath, by means of experiencing the whole body while breathing out, by means of experiencing the whole body while breathing in, by means of calming the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) while breathing out, by means of calming the bodily formation while breathing in, by means of experiencing rapture (pīti) while breathing out, by means of experiencing rapture while breathing in, by means of experiencing pleasure while breathing out, by means of experiencing pleasure while breathing in, by means of experiencing the mental formation (cittasaṅkhāra) while breathing out, by means of experiencing the mental formation while breathing in, by means of calming the mental formation while breathing out, by means of calming the mental formation while breathing in, by means of experiencing the mind (citta) while breathing out, by means of experiencing the mind while breathing in, by means of gladdening the mind while breathing out, by means of gladdening the mind while breathing in, by means of concentrating the mind … by means of liberating the mind, contemplating impermanence, contemplating dispassion (virāga), contemplating cessation (nirodha), contemplating relinquishment (paṭinissagga) — by means of contemplating relinquishment while breathing out, by means of contemplating relinquishment while breathing in: one-pointedness of mind and non-distraction is concentration (samādhi). By means of that concentration, knowledge (ñāṇa) arises; by that knowledge the taints (āsava) are exhausted. Thus serenity (samatha) comes first, knowledge afterwards; by that knowledge there is the exhaustion of the taints. Therefore it is said: wisdom in the cutting off of the taints owing to the purity of non-distraction is the knowledge in the concentration of immediate result (ānantarikasamādhi).
