Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 214

[214] "Taints" (āsavā): What are those taints (āsava)? The taint of sensual desire (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), the taint of views (diṭṭhāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). Where are these taints destroyed? By the path of stream-entry (sotāpattimagga) the taint of views is destroyed without remainder; the taint of sensual desire that leads to the states of loss is destroyed; the taint of existence that leads to the states of loss is destroyed; the taint of ignorance that leads to the states of loss is destroyed. It is here that these taints are destroyed. By the path of once-returning (sakadāgāmimagga) the gross taint of sensual desire is destroyed; the taint of existence standing together with it is destroyed; the taint of ignorance standing together with it is destroyed. It is here that these taints are destroyed. By the path of non-returning (anāgāmimagga) the taint of sensual desire is destroyed without remainder; the taint of existence standing together with it is destroyed; the taint of ignorance standing together with it is destroyed. It is here that these taints are destroyed. By the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) the taint of existence is destroyed without remainder; the taint of ignorance is destroyed without remainder. It is here that these taints are destroyed. That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of what is known, and wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: wisdom in the cutting off of the taints, owing to the purity of non-distraction, is knowledge of the concentration (samādhi) of immediate result (ānantarikasamādhi).
