[228] "In rightly cutting off": one rightly cuts off sensual desire (kāmacchanda) by renunciation (nekkhamma); one rightly cuts off ill will (byāpāda) by non-ill will; one rightly cuts off dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) by the perception of light (ālokasaññā); one rightly cuts off restlessness (uddhacca) by non-distraction; one rightly cuts off doubt (vicikicchā) by the defining of dhammas; one rightly cuts off ignorance (avijjā) by knowledge (ñāṇa); one rightly cuts off discontent (arati) by gladness (pāmojja); one rightly cuts off the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) by the first jhāna … one rightly cuts off all defilements (kilesa) by the path of arahantship.
