[229] He causes cessation: by renunciation (nekkhamma) he causes sensual desire (kāmacchanda) to cease; by non-ill will he causes ill will (byāpāda) to cease; by the perception of light (ālokasaññā) he causes dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) to cease; by non-distraction (avikkhepa) he causes restlessness (uddhacca) to cease; by the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna) he causes doubt (vicikicchā) to cease; by knowledge (ñāṇa) he causes ignorance (avijjā) to cease; by gladness (pāmujja) he causes discontent (arati) to cease; by the first jhāna he causes the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) to cease … by the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) he causes all defilements (kilesa) to cease.
