[238] Wisdom (paññā) in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind (asallīnatta-pahitatta-paggahaṭṭha) for the non-arising of unarisen sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the exertion of energy (vīriyārambha). Wisdom in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind for the abandoning of arisen sensual desire is knowledge in the exertion of energy. Wisdom in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind for the arising of unarisen renunciation (nekkhamma) is knowledge in the exertion of energy. Wisdom in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind for the arising of the unarisen path of arahantship (arahattamagga) is knowledge in the exertion of energy. Wisdom in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of the arisen path of arahantship is knowledge in the exertion of energy.
It is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of that being known; it is wisdom in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: wisdom in the sense of exerting the unshrinking and dedicated mind is knowledge in the exertion of energy.
