[242] How is wisdom (paññā) regarding the comprisal of all dhammas as one, and regarding the penetration (paṭivedha) of their diversity and unity, knowledge (ñāṇa) that is purification of vision (dassanavisuddhi)?
"All dhammas": the five aggregates (khandha) … the unincluded dhammas (apariyāpannā dhammā).
"Comprisal as one" (ekasaṅgahatā): all dhammas are comprised as one in twelve modes: in the sense of suchness (tathaṭṭha), in the sense of non-self (anattaṭṭha), in the sense of truth, in the sense of penetration, in the sense of direct knowing, in the sense of full understanding, in the sense of dhamma, in the sense of element (dhātu), in the sense of the known, in the sense of realization, in the sense of contacting, in the sense of breakthrough (abhisamaya) — in these twelve modes all dhammas are comprised as one.
"Diversity and unity": sensual desire is diversity, renunciation (nekkhamma) is unity … all defilements (kilesa) are diversity, the path of Arahantship is unity.
"In the penetration": one penetrates the truth of suffering (dukkha) as the penetration that is full understanding (pariññā); one penetrates the truth of origin as the penetration that is abandonment (pahāna); one penetrates the truth of cessation as the penetration that is realization (sacchikiriyā); one penetrates the truth of the path as the penetration that is development (bhāvanā).
"Purification of vision": at the moment of the path of stream-entry, vision is being purified; at the moment of the fruition of stream-entry, vision is purified; at the moment of the path of once-returning, vision is being purified; at the moment of the fruition of once-returning, vision is purified; at the moment of the path of non-returning, vision is being purified; at the moment of the fruition of non-returning, vision is purified; at the moment of the path of Arahantship, vision is being purified; at the moment of the fruition of Arahantship, vision is purified. That, in the sense of being known, is knowledge (ñāṇa); in the sense of understanding, it is wisdom. Hence it is said: wisdom regarding the comprisal of all dhammas as one, and regarding the penetration of their diversity and unity, is knowledge that is purification of vision.
