[241] "In the demonstration of meaning" (atthasandassane): abandoning sensual desire, one demonstrates the meaning of renunciation (nekkhamma); abandoning ill will, one demonstrates the meaning of non-ill-will (abyāpāda); abandoning dullness and drowsiness, one demonstrates the meaning of the perception of light (ālokasaññā); abandoning restlessness, one demonstrates the meaning of non-distraction (avikkhepa); abandoning doubt, one demonstrates the meaning of the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna); abandoning ignorance, one demonstrates the meaning of knowledge (ñāṇa); abandoning discontent (arati), one demonstrates the meaning of gladness (pāmujja); abandoning the hindrances (nīvaraṇa), one demonstrates the meaning of the first jhāna … abandoning all defilements (kilesa), one demonstrates the meaning of the path of arahantship.
That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of what is known; it is wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Therefore it is said: wisdom in the exposition of various dhammas is knowledge in the demonstration of meaning.
