[278] And what is the disposition (āsaya) of beings? "The world is eternal," or "the world is not eternal," or "the world is finite," or "the world is infinite," or "the soul and the body are the same," or "the soul is one thing, the body another," or "the Tathāgata exists after death," or "the Tathāgata does not exist after death," or "the Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death," or "the Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death" — thus beings are either dependent upon a view of existence or dependent upon a view of non-existence. Or else, without resorting to either of these two extremes, acceptance in conformity (anulomikā khanti) with regard to dhammas dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā) has been obtained, or knowledge (ñāṇa) of them as it really is.
He knows one even as he indulges in sensuality. He knows one even as he indulges in sensuality thus: "This person gives weight to sensuality, has sensuality as his disposition, is intent upon sensuality." He knows one even as he indulges in renunciation (nekkhamma) thus: "This person gives weight to renunciation, has renunciation as his disposition, is intent upon renunciation." He knows one even as he indulges in ill will (byāpāda) thus: "This person gives weight to ill will, has ill will as his disposition, is intent upon ill will." He knows one even as he indulges in non-ill will (abyāpāda) thus: "This person gives weight to non-ill will, has non-ill will as his disposition, is intent upon non-ill will." He knows one even as he indulges in dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) thus: "This person gives weight to dullness and drowsiness, has dullness and drowsiness as his disposition, is intent upon dullness and drowsiness." He knows one even as he indulges in the perception of light (ālokasaññā) thus: "This person gives weight to the perception of light, has the perception of light as his disposition, is intent upon the perception of light."
This is the disposition of beings.
