[310] The misapprehension through adherence (abhinivesaparāmāsa) thus: 'Dependent on feeling (vedanā), dependent on perception, dependent on volitional formations, dependent on consciousness, dependent on the eye, dependent on the ear, dependent on the nose, dependent on the tongue, dependent on the body, dependent on the mind, dependent on forms, dependent on sounds, dependent on odours, dependent on tastes, dependent on tangibles, dependent on dhammas, dependent on eye-consciousness, dependent on ear-consciousness, dependent on nose-consciousness, dependent on tongue-consciousness, dependent on body-consciousness, dependent on mind-consciousness, dependent on eye-contact, dependent on ear-contact, dependent on nose-contact, dependent on tongue-contact, dependent on body-contact, dependent on mind-contact, dependent on feeling born of eye-contact, dependent on feeling born of ear-contact, dependent on feeling born of nose-contact, dependent on feeling born of tongue-contact, dependent on feeling born of body-contact, dependent on feeling born of mind-contact, there arises pleasure and joy: this is the gratification (assāda) of feeling born of mind-contact' — is a view (diṭṭhi).
The view is not the gratification; the gratification is not the view. The view is one thing, the gratification another. The view together with the gratification: this is called a view of gratification (assādadiṭṭhi). A view of gratification is wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi); wrong view is failure of view (diṭṭhivipatti). A person possessed of that failure of view is a person who has failed in view. A person who has failed in view should not be associated with, should not be resorted to, should not be attended upon. For what reason? Because his view is evil.
As to the view and the lust (rāga): the lust is not the view; the view is not the lust. The view is one thing, the lust another. The view together with the lust: this is called lust for views (diṭṭhirāga). A person possessed of that view and that lust is one who delights in lust for views. A gift given to a person who delights in lust for views is not of great fruit, not of great benefit. For what reason? Because his view is evil.
A view of gratification is wrong view. For an individual of wrong view there are two destinations (gati): hell or the animal realm. And for an individual of wrong view, whatever bodily action is undertaken and carried out in full accordance with that view, whatever verbal action and whatever mental action is undertaken and carried out in full accordance with that view, and whatever volition, whatever aspiration, whatever resolve, and whatever volitional formations there are — all those dhammas lead to what is unwished for, unwanted, disagreeable, to harm and to suffering (dukkha). For what reason? Because his view is evil. Just as when a neem seed, or a bitter-gourd seed, or a bitter-melon seed is planted in moist soil, whatever nutritive essence of earth it takes up and whatever nutritive essence of water it takes up, all that conduces to bitterness, to acridity, to unpleasantness — for what reason? Because the seed is bad — even so, for an individual of wrong view, whatever bodily action is undertaken and carried out in full accordance with that view, whatever verbal action and whatever mental action is undertaken and carried out in full accordance with that view, and whatever volition, whatever aspiration, whatever resolve, and whatever volitional formations there are — all those dhammas lead to what is unwished for, unwanted, disagreeable, to harm and to suffering. For what reason? Because his view is evil.
A view of gratification is wrong view. Whatever view there is, is a resort to views, a thicket of views … is misapprehension through adherence to views. It is with these eighteen aspects that there is the bondage of a mind obsessed [by views] — wrong view that consists in a view of gratification.
