[342] By which five modes is there adherence through the view grasping an extreme (antaggāhikā diṭṭhi) "the soul (jīva) and the body (sarīra) are the same"?
The view (diṭṭhi) that is adherence and misapprehension (abhinivesa-parāmāsa), "Form is both the soul and the body; that which is the soul is the body" — by that view that extreme is grasped; therefore it is a view grasping an extreme. The view is not the basis (vatthu); the basis is not the view; the view is one thing, the basis another: the view together with the basis — this is the first view grasping an extreme, "the soul and the body are the same." A view grasping an extreme is wrong view … these are fetters, but not views. The view that is adherence and misapprehension, "Feeling (vedanā) is both the soul and the body; perception is both the soul and the body; volitional formations are both the soul and the body; consciousness is both the soul and the body; that which is the soul is the body" — by that view that extreme is grasped; therefore it is a view grasping an extreme … It is by these five modes that there is adherence through the view grasping an extreme "the soul and the body are the same."
