[372] What is the beginning, what is the middle, what is the end of the first jhāna? For the first jhāna, purity of the mode of practice (paṭipadāvisuddhi) is the beginning, the strengthening of equanimity (upekkhānubrūhanā) is the middle, gladdening (sampahaṃsanā) is the end.
