[376] What is the beginning, what the middle, what the end of the second jhāna? Of the second jhāna, purity of the mode of practice (paṭipadāvisuddhi) is the beginning, the strengthening of equanimity (upekkhānubrūhanā) is the middle, gladdening (sampahaṃsanā) is the end. … Thus the mind (citta) that has proceeded through the threefold course, possessing the threefold goodness and endowed with the ten characteristics, is endowed with sustained thought (vicāra), endowed with rapture, endowed with pleasure (sukha), endowed with steadiness (adhiṭṭhāna) of mind, endowed with faith (saddhā), endowed with energy, endowed with mindfulness, endowed with concentration (samādhi), and endowed with wisdom (paññā).
