Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 396

[396] Understanding the mind's (citta) unification and non-distraction by way of the long in-breaths and out-breaths, one brings the faculties (indriya) together, understands the domain (gocara), and penetrates the even and the meaning … brings the dhammas together, understands the domain, and penetrates the even and the meaning. "He brings the faculties together": how does he bring the faculties together? He brings the faith faculty (saddhindriya) together in the sense of resolution (adhimokkha); he brings the energy faculty (vīriyindriya) together in the sense of exertion; he brings the mindfulness faculty (satindriya) together in the sense of establishment; he brings the concentration faculty (samādhindriya) together in the sense of non-distraction; he brings the wisdom faculty (paññindriya) together in the sense of seeing. This person brings these faculties together upon this object (ārammaṇa). Therefore it is said, "he brings the faculties together." "And understands the domain": that which is its object is its domain; that which is its domain is its object. "He understands": [this refers to] the person; the act of understanding is wisdom (paññā). "Even (samaṃ)": the establishment of the object is even; the non-distraction of the mind is even; the steadfastness of the mind is even; the cleansing of the mind is even. "Meaning (attho)": the meaning that is blamelessness, the meaning that is freedom from defilement, the meaning that is cleansing, the supreme meaning. "Penetrates": he penetrates the meaning that is the establishment of the object; he penetrates the meaning that is the mind's non-distraction; he penetrates the meaning that is the mind's steadfastness; he penetrates the meaning that is the mind's cleansing. Therefore it is said, "and penetrates the even and the meaning."
